Where the Wild Things Are author Maurice Sendak with one of his famous characters.

“And now,” cried Max, “let the wild rumpus start!”  from the book, Where the Wild Things Are, by Maurice Sendak. It saddened me to hear Sendak, age 83, passed away this morning on Tuesday, May 8.

It is one of my favorite stories to read to my kids because I enjoy it just as much as them. It’s the story of a mischievious little boy named Max. After he was sent to bed by his mom for being mischievious, he wished away the world and that was replaced with wild vines, ocean and jungle. He escaped into this new world of his creation that was full of other ‘wild things’ where he became king.

I love it, just as much as my children because they can relate. All kids are mischievious and there is something so entertaining, yet sweet about many of the mischievious characters in stories. The first time I read my kids Where the Wild Things Are, they were both captivated and frightened at the same time. “Is this a scary story,” Devin asked me with his hazel, almond shaped eyes that were suddenly as wide as I had ever seen them. He wasn’t quite sure if he wanted to hear it, yet he didn’t want me to stop reading because he just had to see what would happen next. The story kept them on the edge of frightening them one minute and making them laugh the next.

Eventually, after hearing the story several times, my son Devin would jump off the bed and yell “roar!” while I read the story to them because he had realized maybe he was more similar to Max than he realized.

Max eventually realizes that he misses his home after all and living on an island with other ‘Wild things” isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. “And Max the king of all wild things was lonely and wanted to be where someone loved him best of all,”  Where the Wild Things Are.’ Devin went through the stage when he was around 6 years old, when every time he didn’t get his way, he would pack his Thomas the Train suitcase, drag it down the stairs and announce he was leaving. Like I said, my kids could relate to this story as I am sure others have and will too.

Thank you Maurice Sendak for the enchanting story, that my older kids still enjoy and my 2-year-old is just discovering.

Sendak wrote Where the Wild Things Are in 1963, which was considered controversial at the time and it seemed to be the most popular many of his other books.

How to Get Gum Out of Hair

How my children can get wads of this stuff in their hair, I just don’t know. And supposedly neither do they.

I have found over the last several years that the Internet can be a mom’s best friend. Many of us moms can’t just pop over to grandma’s house for advice or help, because like mine, she lives thousands of miles away. (sigh)

In the past, when my first two were smaller, they would get little pieces of gum in their hair and I had heard through the grapevine that ice would work (which it didn’t for me, like ever) and peanut butter was so messy, so I ended up using scissors because they were such small pieces.

But right after Christmas this year, my 2 year old, Makayla, who seems to get into mischief at every turn was playing with Silly Putty that Santa had put in all of the kids’ stockings this year. (And probably won’t next year .

Makayla managed to get the whole wad of Silly Putty stuck to the back of her head. I seriously would have had to chop all of the hair in the back of her head if I used scissors this time. Geez.

So I looked up how to get silly putty out of your hair in Google. I was somewhat relieved to found out I wasn’t alone because there were a great deal of links out there on how to get Silly Putty out of your hair effectively without having to chop all of the hair off or use a nasty chemical such as WD-40 which I wouldn’t dare to use on my child’s had. Honestly it may work, but on a kid’s hair?.

The issue with Silly Putty is that it’s a silicone based polymer and you need something that will dissolve or break the silicone down. It took awhile because there was so much, but I used baby oil. The sites suggested cooking oil too because it breaks the Silly Putty down as your rubbing it through the Silly Putty. It took me about 45 minutes or so, but I did it.

And just the other day, my soon to be 7-year-old daughter managed to get a wad of gum in her hair! “I went to throw it away and I somehow got it in my hair,” Olivia said with a scrunched up face, looking upset.

My husband and I burst out laughing because we couldn’t figure out how she could have done such a thing. I mean a 2 year old yes, but my 6 year old? I didn’t have any baby oil in the house so I used Canola oil and it successfully and painlessly worked for getting the gum out of her hair.

When I was searching through the Internet today looking for sahms and wahms groups in my area I came across this preview of an Anderson Cooper show back in January titled, “Are Stay-at-Home Moms Lazy?” Many of you have probably seen this and I admit I have been out of the loop a bit since relocating to our current city, but after watching 2 minutes I was just livid. Basically it’s three stay-at-home moms and three work-at-home and the work-at-home moms are saying that staying home with your children is an excuse for being lazy, not taking responsibility and not staying in shape because sahms have no pride in themselves. (Oh ok, can you tell I am laughing right now?).

It’s hard to believe after all of these years, people are still passing judgement between working outside of the home or staying home. In fact, since relocating I have been insulted a number of times about my choice to stay home with my children which has totally taken me aback, since the city where I previously lived for almost 10 years was very pro-sahm and pro-wahms.

In my opinion, if someone is lazy, he/she is lazy, whether she stays home or has a job outside of the home. I have worked outside of the home before my first child and when I made my choice to stay home with my children and be a sahm I was overwhelmed at how much work I had to do. I tell people that staying home with my children is the hardest job I ever had, but the most rewarding. I started off as a sahm and because I believed I could have the best of both worlds I ended up a wahm, which gave me even less time.

I think it’s a debate that will go on forever and honestly, the decision that is made is should be based on what is best for that individual and not another’s person’s idea of what she thinks is right.
