Baby Makayla

  Children are like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get. When my first two were babies I didn’t really have an issue with them putting things into their mouths. But our third, Makayla, just doesn’t stop. Don’t let that innocent sweet face fool you, if you turn your head for one second, she is like lightening.

When I was at my desk working yesterday, I had her on my lap and of course she grabbed what ever was within her reach within seconds, apparently some things I didn’t even see. I quickly grabbed everything out of her hands and put her in her exersaucer so I could finish what I was doing.

Last night, I was up and down all night with Makayla and all I could figure was that her tummy was upset. Imagine my surprise this afternoon when I was changing her and saw something bright pink in her poop. “What is that?” I thought, as I maneuvered the diaper around and discovered what it was. A little pink plastic paper clip! OMG! How the heck did I miss her eating that?

When I told my mommy friends on skype they started swapping stories about when their kids were babies. Man, just when you think you have some experience on your third child, it is like starting all over again.

   I was thrilled to hear the news that John Travolta and Kelly Preston are expecting a baby. It was announced on Kelly’s site: “It’s impossible to keep a secret….especially one as wonderful as this. We want to be the first to share this great news with everyone that we are expecting a new addition to our family. Love, John, Kelly and Ella”

Kelly, who is 47, is three months pregnant. Hubby, John is 56.

It’s such blessed news more than a year after their son, Jett Travolta died in January 2009 after suffering a seizure. Jett was only 16 years old. 

And recently(last Thursday), their 2 dogs were accidentally hit and killed while being taken for a walk on the tarmac at the airport in Bangor, Maine.

They also have a daughter Ella Bleu who is 10 years old. Congratulations on your new addition!

Kate Gosselin call 4 help

 Oh no! Kate Gosselin needs help! Do we as moms throw her a rope or leave her out to there to fend for herself? After all, she has had so many more financial opportunities than many of us moms, have had like people to babysit, clean her house, free trips, free teeth whitening, oh wait, that is just jealousy talking. lol. 

I was reading her blog today because HLN was saying now that Kate is home she is crying, “Help” on her blog.  Back to HLN,who instantly brought out the critics of Kate and how could she even have time to blog.

Oh and comments on her blog telling her to suck it up. Geez.

Yes, I read the rant about the incessant tattling going on between the kids, feeling like a referee, yada yada. It’s all too familiar and I really don’t see why it’s news and why the criticisms.

You have to admit, even secretly, that you may have thought about how cool it would be to have some of those advantages, minus the whole living in a fish bowl thing. But housecleaning and a free trip to Hawaii and Disneyworld would be fantastic!

Come on people, she is still a mother with eight kids. I get exhausted and I only have 3.

On Friday, May 14, Robert Munsch wrote a very honest “Note to Parents” on his site about being diagnosed as obsessive-compulsive and manic-depressive and how he has been battling addiction as a result of it. Recent reports and fans applaud Munsch for being so forthright to his public admission and stand by him all the way.

I think what really sticks out and disturbs people are the costumes. They are so creepy, at least to me. I know the parents commented on the costumes saying it’s no different than wearing bathing suits, but I wouldn’t dress my daughter in a bathing suit that looked like she was on the burlesque stage either way. It must have ran through at least one parent’s mind. And the kids don’t know any different, they are just out there to have fun so isn’t it our job to at least talk to them about it?

Keeping that in mind, I want to know what you think? Is it the costumes that freak you out? Is society trying to push kids into growing up too fast? What about the TLC Toddlers and Tiaras? I have watched a couple of shows out of curiosity and I can’t get past all the damn makeup they put on those beautiful little children. And what does the pageantry world at such a young age really teach the children? It looked to me that it was all about superficiality. I didn’t see anyone working with the children on their school studies or other activities like maybe sports, dance or theatre if they want to see them on stage. At least it is a skill.

Stuck What in Your Ear?

Take my son for instance. Last night, I found my husband looking in Devin’s ear with a flashlight. “I think there is something in his ear,” he said to me as I walked upstairs to bed. “He said his ear is bothering him.”

“Hmmm. . . unless he put something in there,” I replied looking at Devin, who looked at me with the deer in the headlights look. You know the look when you’re child just did something he probably shouldn’t?

 ”I did.” he said quietly looking up at me.

“Oh no! What did you put in there?” as my husband and I took turns tugging at his ear and angling the flashlight up so we could take a good look. I could see something red and reflecting off of the light like a little jewel. It was a piece of lego, one of his favorite things to play with and apparently thought as we all were getting ready for bed that it was a good idea to literally shove it into his ear canal. 

“Crap.” I muttered tugging at his ear hoping it wasn’t too tightly fitted in there and would just fall out. No such luck.

My next thought was, emergency room in the middle of the night and a minimum of about a 5 hour wait because for some reason children’s emergencies always seem to happen at night and pack the Children’s Hospital emergency room. So I Googled “kids sticking something in ear” and apparently, although being a mother of three I was familiar with this scenario, it is very common for children to stick things in their ears, nose and mouth.

It was one of those little red angled lego pieces you attached onto cars for headlights and it was the perfect shape to fit into his tiny ear.

So after about an hour or so of tugging at his ear a few times, having him shake his head a few times, flushing it out with water and then finally dislodging it with tweezers we sat him down and said, “If you have a question about this stuff can’t you just ask? We can look at anatomy books, we can look on the computer and answer whatever curious questions you have. Just don’t stick things in your ear smaller than your elbow.” as we both gave him a hug.

Of course, my husband who thinks everything is comical was snickering as he walked away. “It’s not funny, ” I replied, “He could seriously damage something and if you don’t make him understand that he will stick something else in there. It’s not like it’s the first thing he has stuck in his ear, remember the cheerios?”

Man. And on the same day my daughter had the rich idea to show her Tinkerbell panties for show and tell. There’s never a dull moment.

Olivia

   OMG, one thing I can say about parenting is there is never a dull moment.  Let’s take my sweet little daughter, Olivia (we call her Livi). She will be 5 years old this month, goes to a Christian preschool and to her life is about sunshine and rainbows. To her life is too short and magical to worry or care about the details. 

Yesterday she had the privilege of being the star of Show and Share at school.

“What do you want to bring to school and share with your classmates?” I asked. “Whatever. I don’t care,” she replied with the carefree attitude and cherub smile she usually gives me for everything.

“Well, how about if I pack something in your backpack?” I asked, knowing she was already done with our conversation and on to playing with Mr. Potato head. “Sounds great mama!” she answered and skipped off.

So I packed Thumbelina and the brown bear her grandmother had made for her out of an old fur stole with delicate little pearls around it’s neck. Of course, Livi was just happy enough to go to school and forgot her backpack so I had to quickly drive back home with Makayla and Devin in tow, grab the back pack, fly back and hand the backpack off to the teachers.

Well, needless to say over an hour later when I went to pick up Olivia her three teachers were in hysterics, one was laughing so hard I thought she was going to pee her pants as they told me Olivia’s Show and Share story. Keep in mind I always keep a snack, water bottle and change of clothes also in her back pack.

“Apparently, Olivia thought she should show every single thing that was in the backpack to the class,” her teacher said as she was laughing.

“What?” I asked, unsure of where the conversation was going.

“Well, she pulled every single thing out of the backpack and said, ‘And these are my Tinkerbell panties’ pulling them out of her bag with her change of pants”, she explained and all three teachers were just howiling as I felt my face get hot. I was a mixture of embarassment and amusement.

“Her classmates were very interested and one actually asked to see them, we of course stopped them right there, but we all found amusement out of it.”

When we got in the car I turned around and asked how her Show and Share was.

“I planted a snake plant today!” she replied proudly holding up a stryofoam cup filled with soil and a big bright smile.

“No care in the world,” I said under my breath, “I wish I lived in your world,” I said just giggling to myself.

  Wow, I wish I knew about some of these apps when I had my Makayla last July. Check out some of these iPhone Apps that can be mommy’s little helper, from a nursing tracker, to fun games that will keep the kids entertained on long trips to a weight loss tracker to help you get back in shape! Hmm. . . I will have to check that one out!
